I have just started the elder scrolls 5 skyrim. Is there any back story I should know from the past games?

Also, is the Empire in the elder scrolls 5 skyrim evil? What is there background? What is the background of the stormcloaks? I really trying to decide on which side to take and who is right or wrong.I have just started the elder scrolls 5 skyrim. Is there any back story I should know from the past games?
****SPOILERS****

The only backstory you really need to know concerning past games is that the Oblivion Crisis occurred hundreds of years before the events in Skyrim (that is covered in TES IV: Oblivion), and that the Imperial Legion and the Blades have since crumbled in power. The Aldmeri Dominion (a race of ultra-elven-supremacists) have become a thorn in everyone's side, having fought a great war against the Imperial Legion, a war which ended with the White Gold Concordat. The Concordat, to many Nords and others in Skyrim, was a sellout by the Imperials to the Dominion. The High King of Skyrim was a part of this, and when Ulfric Stormcloak rebelled, it pitted the Imperials against the Stormcloaks. Ulfric, at the start of the game, has just been captured after he used his Thu'um to shout the High King apart. People in Skyrim either think that he is a traitor and has to answer for his crime (most races besides Nords) or that he was part of an ancient ritual where he proved that he, not the existing High King, was fit to rule Skryim.

That's where you come in.

The Empire in Skyrim is what's left of the Legion from TES IV. They've been spread thin, and are certainly corrupt. However, despite all of their misgivings, they've held Skyrim under their dominion since its creation, and if the Stormcloaks succeed, all races other than the Nords will be expelled out of Skyrim. (Consider them like the Roman Legion under Caesar, both good and bad)

The Stormcloaks are the loyal followers of the rebel leader, Ulfric Stormcloak, Jarl of Windhelm. They are (mostly) extremely racist, and in Windhelm have created a ghetto for Dark Elves where they are abused and mistreated. Stormcloaks believe that the Empire sold out to the Dominion, and that they've influenced Skyrim long enough. They fight to free Skyrim and argue that all true Nords would follow their example. They have more moral support on their side.

Neither side is right or wrong--each has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, the Stormcloaks generally focus on Light Armor while the Imperial Legion endorses Heavy Armor. Either way, you'll find some things among each side that you'll probably feel uncomfortable about (it's supposed to be somewhat real warfare).

Hope this helped!
your choice in the intro quest only changes minor details, such as starting equipment (which can be replaced by looting enemies within that quest), your contact in Riverwood, and some minor changes within the civil war questline in the form of dialogue options.

In the civil war questline, your decision determines where you will be invading. To figure out beforehand which holds are allied to which faction, you can look at any of the territory maps (located in any jarl's home building). they can be recognized by red and blue flags pinned to them.

Many people are biased against the Empire, as they are to be executed by them for no real reason in the intro, as was I from the beginning, but neither is really better than the other.

TES 5 Skyrim was my first game in this series, and I knew next to nothing of the backstory until i played through. basically, there was a "Great War", where the Empire almost lost. they signed a treaty, which banned worship of Talos (one of the 9 deities) because he was a man first. The civil war is, in part, a result of this, as well as a racial/nationalistic war. the Stormcloak Nords (Skyrim natives) don't like the Empire (seen as puppets of the elves) controlling them, or the non-human races (for varied reasons).

One of the reasons I like Skyrim is that there is no need to know the history going in, as you can learn it as you go along, often at your leisure.I have just started the elder scrolls 5 skyrim. Is there any back story I should know from the past games?
It depends what you think of. They both have their goods and flaws.

I think it is the type of race you choose (My opinion). Since I made a Dark Elf, I chose the imperials because Stormcloaks are racist to the elves mostly to the Dark elves in Morrowind. Ulfric has killed lots of innocent people. He just wants to gain power. Although Imperials have done many bad things as well.
neither is really right or wrong, if you wan to get a clearer picture of the past games, look for the books in game about the empire and stormcloaks, they give very clear pictures of the storyline.I have just started the elder scrolls 5 skyrim. Research Storm cloaks and imperials battle and your set.Its not really needed though.
